Acrylic or Poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA) is a plastic material which is a close substitute of glass. It is a versatile material with highly desirable properties. It usually is in the form of sheets of difference size and thickness(1-40 mm). It can be transparent, translucent, opaque, or can come in a wide range of colours. It is light weight, immune to effect of weather and environment, impact resistant (unlike glass it does not get shattered), immune to many chemicals, and easily formable. It can also give protection from UV radiation. It is friendlier to the human tissues. Due to all this, it is widely used in medical science in Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Dentistry and other areas. Eyeglass lenses are commonly made of PMMA. Intraocular lenses implanted after cataract operation ca n be of acrylic material. PMMA bone cement finds application in orthopaedic surgery. In dentistry, dentures are made of acrylic. Acrylic sheets due to their good light transmission properties and excellent strength are finding increased usage in construction industry in the form of window panes, sky lights, dome structures, and sunscreens. It is clearer than window glass and does not turn yellow. It can transmit 92% of light. Other important applications of acrylic is in bullet proof glasses, aircraft, aquariums, bath tubs, decorative purpose, sign boards, furniture, LCD screens only to name a few.
