Belt Conveyor

Description/ Specification of Belt Conveyor

Belt conveyors or conveyor belts are used for a variety of material handling and transportation purposes. They belong to a generic group of material handling equipment called conveyor of which there are various other subclasses like screw conveyor, chain conveyor, bucket conveyor etc. The range of materials handled by them can be those in bulk material handling like food grains, minerals, coal, overburden, ash, slurry, clinker etc. Conveyors are also used for moving goods under manufacture, or processed and packed products in side a factory from one work section to another. They find application in airports, escalators or walkways for moving goods or people. Applications can be in horizontal, or inclined directions or a combination of the two. The basic structure of a conveyor belt comprises of two parts: inner layer called carcass which provide strength to the conveyor and outer layer which is called cover. Carcass can be of material like polyester, nylon, cotton fabric etc while the cover is usually of rubber or PVC. For handling flammable items like coal, special fire-retardant material is used. For very heavy material handling applications like transporting raw coal, Steel cord conveyor belts are used which have steel cord used inside them for reinforcing. Steel cord conveyor jointing requires technicians who are highly skilled. Conveyors move over rollers or idlers supported on bearings. Conveyors are mounted on pulleys at both end and are driven by motors at head end (drive end) and also on tail end (non-drive end) in case of long conveyors. Conveyor systems are associated with chute and flap gate for receiving or transferring materials from/to other conveyors or storage equipment called bunkers/silos. Conveyors handling thousands of tons of material over several kilometre have been installed and are in use. For safety of equipment and operating personnel, several interlocks and protections like belt sway switch, pull cord switch, zero speed switch, and belt rip detection systems are used in case of large conveyors carrying bulk material. In case of areas with fire hazard, fire protection and detection systems are also to be installed and maintained, as conveyor fires can be devastating and can spread over huge area.
